You can’t put a price on a good stock dog! Not only do they make your work easier they are you best friend too:

GATE KEEPER

They lay at the gate while you feed and keep the livestock in.

MASTERY

They move livestock from field to field, to the barn, or in a trailer with control and ease.

WORKAHOLIC

Always wanting to please you and will work until they collapse doing it.

PERCISION

Their skills make sorting livestock in the barn easier.

COWORKER

they know their job, always on time, and ready to go! Simply the best!

MEET 3 OF OUR BEST WORKING DOGS

Jill

Our first working Border Collie. She made us realize how valuable a dog is on the farm. That little Border Collie could control a 2,000 pound bull! She also had the first litter of puppies at Lone Hickory Farm and that started it all. Did I mention that Karen Thompson helped Donald find her and that started our friendship too!

Jill

Imported Bonnie

She was the best! When she went to the barn she knew her jobs. If he was putting feed in the troughs she had the sheep gathered up and waiting at the gate to come in. From working livestock, to a trip to the hardware store, to sitting on the porch at the end of the day Bonnie was always by his side. Bonnie was driven to work and a loyal companion.

Imported Bonnie

Imported Meg

Meg is our main working dog now. She was a trial dog before she came to the USA. We call her “Take charge Meg” for a reason. She has a strong and steady presence on sheep. We can always count on Meg to get the job done! She is also known as “Movie Star Meg”. She appeared in an episode of The Walking Dead with Karen Thompson. She retired from the breeding program last year. In the future her puppies TBC Molly and TBC Tess will be added to our program.

Imported Meg

ANGUS CATTLE

The farm has always been a cow calf operation.

DORPER SHEEP

We mainly raise Dorper sheep and sell lambs.

Fun Facts About Border Collies

Charming Quirk

Ever had a Border Collie tilt their head from side to side like they are trying to figure out your every word? That’s a classic Border Collie trait!

Expressive Eyes
The eye is one of the Border Collies defining characteristics. It is deep focused and kind of magical. They use their eyes to guide the livestock and melt the human heart.
Calming Presence
Many Border Collie owners believe their dogs can read their minds and this is not far off. They are so in tune with people that they pick up on body language, tone of voice, and moods. Border Collies sense when someone needs comfort.
Intelligence
You cannot talk about a Border Collie without mentioning their intelligence. They are the Einsteins of the dog world. A Border Collie named Chaser knows the names of over 1,000 objects. The study also showed the basic concept of nouns and verbs. That’s impressive!
Old Hemp
All Border Collies today can be traced back to one dog “Old Hemp” born in 1893. While other dogs relied on nipping and barking he was much quieter. He relied on imtimidating the sheep through his stance, movement, and eye. His style impressed and he sired over 200 puppies. He is considered the father of the Border Collie.
The Name
Collie is the Scottish word that is commonly used to describe a sheepdog. Since the dogs thrived on the border of England and Scotland they were lovingly named Border Collies.
Appearance
The classic Bordee Collie is black and white. They actually come in a variety of colors. They can also be red, merle, tricolor, blue or lilac. Their coats can be rough or smooth and their ears can be many different ways. This diversity in appearance makes them one of the most diverse dogs.
Highly Sensitive
Because Border Collies are so attuned to human emotions that they are sensitive dogs. A harsh word or raised voice can affect them deeply. Positive reinforcement works best with them. Praise and treats work wonders. They crave approval. Praise, positivity, and consistency are the key to knowing they have done a good job.

Lone Hickory Farm

Meet Donald and Karen Crisp

Lone Hickory Farm was purchased by the Crisp family in 1970. Donald is a lifelong farmer. The farm has always been a cow calf operation. We raise all the hay for our livestock too. Jill was our first working Border Collie. She was purchased from Alasdair MacRae to work cattle and was pregnant at the time. This started our love for the Border Collies and puppies. Naturally sheep were added too. Life on a farm entails a lot of hard work but it is a rewarding life.

Border Collie Of The Month

TBC Daisy Jewel

What Our Team Says
We have watched Daisy Jewel grow from a puppy into an amazing family dog on our Facebook group. She lives an active loving life with her owners Dennis and Lisa Wagner. The grandchildren are always having a fun time playing with Daisy Jewel too!
The Owners' Story
We did not fully know what we were getting when we picked our Daisy (Judy/Coal) up from the farm 4 years ago. We knew her breeder, her personality type, and her pedigree. We did not know she would be the best dog who’s ever owned us. We didn’t know that she would do anything we ask of her. Go swimming. No problem! Go to herding lessons. No problem. Play at agility. No problem. Play at the park? No problem! She sailed through all of her obedience classes and even outsmarted the instructor on more than one occasion. She was an AKC Star Puppy, Canine Good Citizen and AKC Urban certified dog long before her first birthday. We did not know on that sunny spring day that she would steal our hearts and be the perfect family dog, happy in her home right in the middle of an urban city. We didn’t know that we were bringing home my grandchildren’s best friend or our constant work companion since we work from home. If Daisy could talk, she’d tell about the wonderful and full life she has in an every day home. She doesn’t think about a farm or sheep (even though she doesn’t like to visit!) because she has her family to herd and protect all day. Somebody has to scare away the UPS and USPS trucks! We see her brain working all day, every day, but she loves to cuddle and play. She only turns “off” at night when she goes into her crate, rolls over on her back, and drifts off to sleep awaiting tomorrow’s adventures. She one happy border collie ♥️

“Virginia Scottish Games”

Every year we do herding demonstrations at the Scottish Games. Karen Thompson provides an excellent program for the spectators. The children love the dogs and puppies. I’ve had a child hold their first puppy here. How precious!
